Q: How long have you been a TIR trainer?
A: I became a TIR trainer in 2023.
A: I became a TIR trainer in 2023.
Q: What inspired you to become a TIR trainer?
A: As a mental health counselor, I first interned at the Trauma Resolution Center and became enthralled by its focus on being trauma-informed and person-centered when working with clients. My mentor, Millie Maldonado, trained me in TIR when I first started. I utilized it in my sessions and very quickly noticed the relief and healing effect it had on my clients. Most of them even shared previous counseling experiences where they felt judged, evaluated, and like there was “something wrong with them”. They shared they felt liberated by this approach to sessions. TIR led me to craft my approach and focus on the individual’s experiences that had led them to experience stress, anxiety, depression, and daily disturbances. As I started to work along other interns, I became passionate about not only utilizing TIR with my clients, but also teaching the various techniques within the TIR umbrella to other counselors as a method to use when clients were ready to process trauma and how to individualize it to their individual needs.

Q: What do you find rewarding about it?
A: Utilizing TIR and training others in TIR has felt rewarding because I am facilitating the process of client’s in their healing journey and clinicians in their professional and personal development. It is rewarding to see the changes in the clients as they come every week through the door and find a place of safety, where whatever they say is valid and important to their treatment.

Q: What are your plans for the future as a TIR Trainer?
A: My plans as a TIR Trainer is to use it in my supervisor roles in present and future professional endeavors. I am passionate about utilizing trauma-informed techniques and applying them to clients I am working with. My plans are to incorporate as one of the methods to incorporate in counseling for my own clients and my supervisees. It is crucial to me that if I am supervising other clinicians or TIR facilitators, they understand trauma, they understand the importance of being present, acknowledging the client, and exploring the client’s traumatic experiences to release the negative emotion and negative thought patterns.
